When considering industrial food systems the basic conclusion is our dominant resources are the cause of over-pollution to earth's air, ground and water. The earth's topsoil is stripped of nutrients daily and isn't being replenished at an expeditious rate. This need is leading all food systems to switch to sustainable grow methods to save future generations. Composting is a must if "in ground" growing is your best option for growing your own food. But what about other ways to grow sustainably?

Researching tech companies in agriculture brought my attention to the industry of Aquaponics and more specifically produce farms on the big island Hawai'i. I figured this locale was ideal since the closest nation is an ocean apart, their economy must know useful tips on growing resourcefully. Through this research I discovered a coffee and lettuce farmer.

Wes McLaughlin, an outdoor farmer in Kailuna-Kona started 3 Keiki Farms in his backyard acreage. Rows of 2' x 10' aquaponic pool tables are connected via above ground pipes. Water flows through cyclically dispersing nutrients from a huge fish tank to over an acre of organic produce.

For Wes, making the switch to becoming a sustainable grower was an easy decision to a problematic way of life. "I was a corporate slave… I wanted a radical 180," the farmer in his mid forties and a Washington state native opened up about his former position as an attorney. “To make (organic farming) a full time business, not just a hobby, it takes a lot of time and luck.”

Wes was part of a growing trend of American families in the early 2010s who transitioned to owning or operating rural farms.

Now having dedicated more than 10 years to farm work, he admits this trend can take place in urban settings as well. “Anyplace that has cheap electricity can grow indoors hydroponically.”

Being inspired by independent growers like Wes is an aspect of vegan life that I take joy and pride in. Eating natural foods on the Big Island was an experience like no other. The lettuce we grew on 3 Keiki Farms was fresh and the taste was marvelous! Organic is truly the best for one's body.

Helping farm sustainably extends the hope for an even more earth balanced global society. With a world that is fueled by organic produce, we can eliminate toxic waste regenerate a stronger,

healthier eco-system.
